By South Sudan Youth Reforms (SSYR)
July 2025
General Dau is a veteran military commander with both SPLA and SPLM-IO roots. His career has spanned some of the most turbulent years of South Sudan’s military history. While he is respected in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, his shifting political affiliations have left others questioning his motives.
“We are tired of changes that only rotate generals within one group,” said a student activist in Malakal. “Where are the commanders from other regions? From the opposition? From women?”
Many believe that such top-down reshuffles do not reflect genuine national unity but further entrench a militarized power base loyal to the regime.
While no public reason was given, analysts speculate that his dismissal may be tied to growing internal dissatisfaction, possible reform leanings, or resistance to aggressive operations in sensitive regions.
South Sudanese youth demand more than symbolism. We demand:
“The youth are not blind. We know when we're being distracted. This is not transformation—it’s reshuffling chairs on a sinking boat.”
SSYR calls on the transitional government and international partners to prioritize structural reform, demilitarization, and youth inclusion in the security sector. Change must go beyond names — it must reflect values, vision, and justice.
