SSYR Echoes UN Call: Trials Must Meet International Standards of Fairness & Transparency
JUBA — For Immediate Release
SSYR visual: “Fair, Transparent Trials — No Political Show Trials.”
We Support the UN’s Position
The United Nations has called on South Sudanese authorities to ensure that any legal proceedings against suspended First Vice President Riek Machar and seven others meet international standards of fairness and transparency. SSYR fully supports this call.
Why It Matters
Impartial Justice: Trials must not be weaponized to silence opposition or collectively punish communities.
International Standards: As a UN member, South Sudan is obliged to uphold due process and human rights guarantees.
National Healing: Without fairness, proceedings will deepen division and destabilize peace efforts.
SSYR’s Commitments & Calls
Transparency: Permit independent observers and public scrutiny throughout any proceedings.
Accountability: Ensure credible, impartial justice mechanisms (AU/IGAD/UN) where necessary.
No Collective Blame: Reject tribal scapegoating; protect civilians and uphold equality before the law.
Bottom line: The youth of South Sudan deserve justice rooted in fairness and the rule of law—not political theatre.
