SSYR Condemns the Arrest of South Sudanese Writer Samuel Peter Oyay
For Immediate Release | 📆 September 30, 2025
The South Sudan Youth Reforms (SSYR) condemns in the strongest terms the arrest and enforced disappearance of South Sudanese writer and government critic Samuel Peter Oyay by Emirati security forces in Dubai on September 30, 2025.
❌ An Attack on Freedom of Expression
- Samuel Peter Oyay is a respected voice for truth, justice, and accountability in South Sudan.
- His recent article (Sept 21) criticized President Kiir’s regime and the sham trial of Dr. Riek Machar.
- His arrest is a clear attempt to silence critics even abroad.
🚨 Regional Complicity & Human Rights Concerns
- SSYR fears collusion between the Juba regime and UAE authorities.
- This is a dangerous case of transnational repression.
- Enforced disappearances are a violation of international law and basic human rights.
📢 SSYR’s Position and Demands
- We demand the immediate release of Samuel Peter Oyay and disclosure of his condition.
- We call on the UAE government to respect human rights norms and due process.
- We urge international organizations and the South Sudanese diaspora to pressure for his release.
- We condemn the Juba regime’s extended intimidation of critics worldwide.
đź”´ A Call to South Sudanese Youth
South Sudanese youth must understand that attacks on writers, activists, and critics are attacks on our future. SSYR stands with Samuel Peter Oyay and his family. His struggle is our collective struggle.
